South Korean violinist Jinjoo Cho is a versatile classical virtuoso of the 21st Century. 1st Prize Winner of the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis and Concours musical international de Montréal in addition to Buenos Aires, Schoenfeld, and Stulberg Competitions, Jinjoo has toured on concert stages around the world since the age of 11. Today, she continues to perform at distinguished concert halls and festivals including the Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium, Aspen Music Festival, Gilmore Festival, La Jolla Music Society’s Summerfest (USA), Banff Centre, Festival de Lanaudière (Canada), La Seine Musicale, Aigues-Vives Music Festival (France), Kronberg Academy, Schwetzingen Festspiele, Herkulessaal (Germany), Teatro Colón (Argentina), and Seoul Arts Center (Korea).

A charismatic soloist, Jinjoo has appeared with leading orchestras such as The Cleveland Orchestra, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, Deutsche Radio Philharmonic, Orquesta Clásica Santa Cecilia de Madrid, Ensemble Appassionato, Seoul Philharmonic, North Carolina, Phoenix, and Charlotte Symphonies, collaborating with renowned conductors such as James Gaffigan, Kent Nagano, JoAnn Falletta, Mathieu Herzog, Peter Oundjian, Michael Stern, Tito Munoz, Michael Francis, Moritz Gnann, Karina Canellakis, Shi-Yeon Sung, Pietari Inkinen, and Clemens Schuldt. Jinjoo has deep love and appreciation for the chamber music repertoire, and cherishes sharing the stage with prominent artists of the globe such as Gary Hoffman, Andreas Ottensamer, Ray Chen, Itamar Golan, Roger Tapping, Jaime Laredo, Sharon Robinson, Vadim Gluzman, and Clive Greensmith. In 2021, Jinjoo formed Trio Seoul with pianist Kyu Yeon Kim and cellist Brannon Cho.

In addition to being an active performer, Jinjoo is a dedicated teacher and an artistic director. She is currently the founding Artistic Director of ENCORE Chamber Music Institute (501(c)(3)non-profit) and an Assistant Professor of Violin at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University, and has previously served as violin faculty at the Cleveland Institute of Music and Oberlin Conservatory. Most recently, Jinjoo served on the official jury panel of international competitions such as the Indianapolis (USA, 2022) and Schoenfeld (China, 2024) competitions, and on the screening committee of the Montréal (Canada, 2019/2023) and Premio Paganini (Italy, 2023) competitions. Jinjoo’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of young musicians stems directly from the influence of her teachers Paul Kantor and Jaime Laredo.

Jinjoo is passionate about sharing her love of music, in whatever form that it takes. A consummate recording artist, Jinjoo has thus far produced 4 albums: Saint-Saëns (Naïve Classique), La Capricieuse (SONY Classical), The Indianapolis Commissions (Azica), and Jinjoo Cho (Analekta). Described as “a delectable curtain-raiser” (Strad Magazine) and “finest silk thread of a violin tone” (Rondo Magazine), Jinjoo’s discography has garnered critical acclaim worldwide as well as commercial success. Her other creative explorations range from commissioning new works by composers Juri Seo and Andrew Rindfleisch to collaborating with artists of other disciplines such as dancer/choreographer Jinyeob Cha. In 2021, Jinjoo’s first book, Shine Someday, was listed as a best seller on major book platforms in Korea.

바이올리니스트 조진주는 연주, 교육, 집필, 예술 경영, 다학제간 협업에 이르기까지 다방면의 활동을 펼쳐나가고 있는 21세기형 아티스트이다. 17세에 2006년 몬트리올 국제 콩쿠르 1위와 관중상을 석권하며 국제적 이목을 끈 그는 “부정할 수 없는 카리스마와 깊이, 서정성과 가슴을 어루만지는 부드러움이 등골을 서늘하게 만든다 (타임스아거스)” 평 받았으며 이후 숀펠드 콩쿠르, 부에노스아이레스 국제 바이올린 콩쿠르 1위를 거쳐 2014년 세계 3대 바이올린 콩쿠르 중 하나인 인디애나폴리스 국제 바이올린 콩쿠르 1위를 수상하며 각광받는 세계적 연주자로 부상하였다.

조진주는 현재 캐나다 국립 맥길대학교에서 조교수로 재직중이며 미국 오하이오 주에 설립한 앙코르 예술제의 초대 예술감독이기도 하다. 과거 클리블랜드, 오벌린 음대의 겸임교수로 재직한 바 있으며 최근 파가니니, 인디애나폴리스, 몬트리올 국제 콩쿠르 등 세계 유수 국제콩쿠르의 심사위원으로 위촉되며 젊은 거장으로서의 두각을 나타내고 있다.

조진주는 솔리스트로서 북미, 아시아, 그리고 유럽의 교향악단과 함께 매 시즌 무대에 서는 연주자다. 미국 클리블랜드 오케스트라, 캐나다 몬트리올 심포니, 독일 SWR 라디오 필하모닉, 스페인 마드리드 산타체칠리아 오케스트라 등 세계적 교향악단과 꾸준히 협업을 이어가고 있을 뿐 아니라 뉴욕 카네기홀, 아스펜 음악제, 뮌헨 헤라쿨레스홀, 파리 라센느 콘서트홀, 부에노스아이레스 테아트로 콜롱, 서울 예술의 전당 등의 유서 깊은 공연장에서 협연, 독주, 실내악 연주 활동을 이어간다. 함께 연주한 저명한 음악가로는 지휘자 켄트 나가노, 제임스 개피건, 마이클 스턴, 성시연, 피아니스트 이타마르 골란, 첼리스트 개리 호프만, 비올리스트 로저 태핑, 에토레 카우자, 바이올리니스트 레이첸, 클라리네티스트 안드레스 오텐잠머 등이 있다. 2022년 피아니스트 김규연, 첼리스트 브래넌조와 함께 트리오서울을 창단하였으며 작곡가 서주리, 최우정, 안무가 차진엽을 비롯한 한국의 다양한 아티스트들과 다학제간 협업을 통한 창작 활동을 앞으로 꾸준히 이어갈 계획이다. 디스코그래피로는 지휘자 매튜 에르조그, 앙상블 아파쇼나토와의 ‘생상’ (2022, Naïve Classique), ‘La Capricieuse’ (2020, SONY), ‘인디애나폴리스 콩쿠르 위촉곡 전곡 앨범’ (2018, Azica), 그리고 데뷔 앨범 ‘Jinjoo Cho’ (2007, Analekta)가 있다. 2023년 하반기 앨범 ‘Novella’의 발매를 앞두고 있다.

주목할 만한 그의 국내활동으로는 금호아트홀 상주 아티스트 선정, 서울문화재단 예술창작지원 아티스트 선정, 한국문화예술위원회 청년예술교류지원 아티스트 선정, 그리고 현대자동차 ZERO1NE, 서울스프링실내악축제, 롯데콘서트홀 클래식레볼루션, 예술의전당 여름축제 등 다양한 예술단체들과의 협업이 있다. 칼럼니스트로서의 조진주는 조선일보, 한국경제, 경향신문 등에 기고하며, 가수 송창식, 이상은, 작가 은희경, 영화감독 신연식, 사진작가 강영호 등을 인터뷰 한 월간 객석 ‘수련의 예술’ 시리즈의 호평으로 에세이집, ‘언젠가 반짝일 수 있을까’를 2021년 출판하였다.

예원학교 수석 입학, 재학 중 도미한 조진주는 클리블랜드 음대에서 폴 켄터와 제이미 라레도를 사사하며 학사/석사/전문사 학위를 취득했으며, 이작 펄만 실내악 워크샵, 뮤직@멘로, 크론버그 아카데미 마스터클래스, 아스펜 음악제 등의 페스티벌에 참가하여 지휘자 데이비드 짐만, 바이올리니스트 자카르 브론, 에머슨/클리블랜드/타카쉬/브렌타노/데이니쉬 콰르텟 등으로부터 지도받았다. 일찍이 음악의 사회적 역할에 대해 고심한 조진주는 세계 곳곳 지역의 봉사/교육 프로그램을 찾아다니며 해설이 있는 음악회, 마스터 클래스 등 음악의 아름다움을 나누는 것에 적극적으로 참여하고 연주를 기획하며 서울대학병원, 아주대학병원 등 의료시설을 비롯해 호스피스 요양원, 꽃동네, 농아학교 등 음악을 쉽게 접하지 못하는 관객들과 장르를 넘나드며 소통하였으며 카페, 갤러리, 재즈 바 등 장소를 불문하고 음악을 나누는 의미있는 일이라면 거리낌 없이 참여하는 모습을 보이기도 한다. 서태지, 새소년, 혁오, 니콜라우스 하농쿠르에 열광하며 강아지 ‘미소’와 몬트리올에서 생활한다.
