듣는 순간 알았다. 이 사람의 연주는 호불호가 분명할 것이라는 것을. ‘불호’인 사람은 더 이상 듣지 않겠지만, ‘호’인 사람은 미치도록 듣게 될 것이다.
생상스의 ‘서주와 론도 카프리치오소’는 바이올리니스트들의 경연장 같은 곡. 일류치고 이 곡을 무대에서 연주하지 않은 이가 있을까. 바이올린의, 바이올린에 의한, 바이올린을 위한 곡이다. 악기 바꿔 연주하기가 하나의 트렌드로 자리잡은 요즘이지만, 이 곡만큼은 그 어떤 악기로 연주해도 바이올린을 대체할 수 없다.
바이올리니스트 조진주의 ‘서주와 론도 카프리치오소’는 11월에 출시된 그의 네 번째 음반의 첫 번째 트랙곡이다. 음반을 생상스의 작품들로만 채웠고, 그래서 타이틀도 ‘생상스’다. ‘서주와 론도 카프리치오소’는 이 음반의 타이틀곡이라 해도 무방할 것이다.
생상스가 자신보다 한창 나이가 어린 당대 최고의 바이올리니스트 파블로 데 사라사테를 위해 작곡한 곡. 프랑스 작곡가가 스페인 바이올리니스트를 위해 썼기에 두 나라의 감성이 물과 잉크처럼 섞여 있다. 여기에 이탈리아도 슬그머니 끼어든다. ‘카프리치오소’는 ‘변덕’이라는 의미를 지닌 이탈리아어다.
이들이 가진 ‘함께 또 따로’의 미묘한 느낌을 얼마나 잘 살리느냐도 연주의 성패를 가늠하는 기준이 된다.
조진주의 연주는 도발적이다. 자칫 지나치게 감상적이거나 기교의 과시로 치달을 수 있는 이 곡을 고속도로 위의 스포츠카처럼 질주한다. 한 점 의심이 들지 않는 호쾌한 연주다.
하나하나 뜯어보면 일류다운 기교로 가득하지만 막상 연주에서는 도드라지지 않는다. 기교는 자동차가 마음껏 달릴 수 있도록 안에서 부품으로서만 기능하고 있다. 청자들은 그저 조진주라는 이름의 이 멋진 스포츠카가 선보이는 눈부신 퍼포먼스를 넋 놓고 바라볼 뿐이다.
여기에 음색을 빼놓을 수 없다. 조진주의 현과 활이 만들어내는 소리는 상당히 독특해 다른 바이올리니스트들과는 확연히 구분된다. 펜으로 치면 촉의 끝이 살짝 갈라져 있다. 이 미묘한 차이가 굵으면서도 어딘지 까칠한 느낌의 ‘조진주 사운드’를 완성한다. 조진주는 이 매력적인 소리를 곡의 전체가 아닌, 포인트 부분에만 적용해 입체감을 더하고 있다.
조진주와 합을 맞춘 아파시오나토 앙상블은 조진주의 사운드에 특화된 듯 완벽하게 동행한다. 역시 힘차고 뼈대가 굵은 사운드로 듣는 이의 귀와 심장을 곧바로 직결시킨다. 지휘자는 완벽하게 조진주의 연주와 해석을 이해하고 있다.
이 음반에는 생상스의 또 다른 바이올린 명작인 협주곡 3번 B단조도 수록되어 있다. 1악장 역시 명연으로 ‘서주와 론도 카프리치오소’처럼 시원시원한 연주다.

Saint-Saëns’ Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso is a concert hall staple for violinists. Is there anyone first-class who has not performed this work on stage? This is a piece of the violin, by the violin, and for the violin. Even though performing works by a different instrument has become a trend these days, no instrument can replace the violin when it comes to this masterpiece.
Violinist Jinjoo Cho's Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso is the first track on her fourth album, released in November. The album was filled with only Saint-Saens' works, so the title is 'Saint-Saens'. Perhaps ‘ntroduction and Rondo Capriccioso could be considered the title track of this album.
This is a work written by Saint-Saëns for Pablo de Sarasate, the greatest violinist of his time, who was younger than Saint-Saëns by far. The French composer wrote it for a Spanish violinist, so the emotions of the two countries are mixed like water and ink. Italy also sneaks in here. ‘Capriccioso’ is an Italian word meaning ‘capricious’. How well a performer can subtly combine these cultural influences determines the success or failure of a performance.
Jinjoo Cho's performance is provocative. This difficult work which can sometimes be overly sentimental or a simple show of skill, runs like a sports car on the highway driven smoothly by her. It's an exciting performance that leaves no doubt. If you look closely at each component of her performance, it is full of first-class virtuosity, but the virtuosity never stands out in the performance. Technique functions only as a part inside so that the car can run freely. The listeners simply stare at the dazzling performance of this wonderful sports car named Jinjoo Cho.
The tone cannot be overlooked here. The sound produced by Jinjoo Cho's strings and bows is quite unique, which sets her apart from other violinists. When compared to a pen, the tip of the nib is slightly split. This subtle difference completes the ‘Jinjoo Cho sound' that is thick yet somewhat harsh. Jinjoo Cho adds three-dimensional effect to the music by applying this attractive sound only to high points of the music, not the whole piece.
Ensemble Apassionato in harmony with Jinjoo Cho, perfectly accompanies her. The ensemble also directly connects the ears and heart of the listener with a powerful and strong backbone of the sound. The conductor perfectly understands Cho's performance and interpretation.
The album also features Saint-Saëns' other violin masterpiece, Concerto No. 3 in B minor. The first movement is also a famous work, and Cho’s performance is once again refreshing, like her Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso.
